Sesskia, talented thief and secret mage, has spent the last ten years traveling the world, searching for ancient books that will teach her magic forbidden in her country. When she is magically transported to another world where magic is not only permitted, but celebrated, she wonders if she ever wants to return. With new friends and a chance at a new life, Sesskia feels as if she’s finally come home. But catastrophe is coming. Her new home Castavir and the world of her birth are coming inexorably together, heralding near-total destruction for both. The mad God-Empress of Castavir intends to take advantage of the crisis by conquering both worlds—whatever is left of them. Sesskia must work with the Castaviran mages to combine their radically different magics to prevent the convergence from happening and save both her worlds.

I don't much like books where the protagonist is very stupid.

So the main character is abducted and imprisoned by strange mages for unknown reasons. Her only advantage is that her magic functions differently than theirs and her abilities unknown to her captors.

So what is the first thing she does when she gains the ability to speak to her captors? Why to describe exactly how her magic works and everything she is capable of, of course. To a person she distrusts and despises to boot.

Yep that happened. The MC really is THAT stupid.

The Summoned Mage Convergence Volume 1 Melissa McShane 9780986402685 Books Reviews

I love every other book and series that Melissa McShane has written but I just couldn't get into this one. The journaling style of narration made the story choppy. It made it hard to get into the book and the story. It was a slow to get going, and many of the world building details were too convoluted to follow with ease. In addition, the romance felt a bit stale and forced. You could see it coming from miles away. I was relieved when the book ended and won't be trying to finish this series. I gave it 2 instead of one stars because I love McShane's other work.
This book is so well-written...Sesskia pulls you along with her and doesn't let go. It was a total delight...I was so psyched when I saw I was only 35% into the book (and so much had happened already, was so interesting, and had me wanting to devote my whole day to the book [who needs a paycheck?]), and that much more psyched that there was 65% more goodness left! I didn't want it to end. But it did - and I am jumping right into the second one!
I have really like McShane's Tremontaine series, so I gave this a try. It didn't even feel like the same author - the heroine was annoying, the storytelling was disjointed, the worldbuilding was weak. I didn't finish it, but I got about halfway before I gave up. I still like her other books, but this was was a dud in my opinion.
First person narration is so often done poorly that I was mentally prepared to dislike this book, especially since I didn't realise it was an epistolary novel. I'm very glad that I decided to read it in spite of my preconceptions. The characters were very well developed and the MC's were relatable, realistic and I was rooting for Sesskia &Cederic the entire time. The worlds were very well thought out and the cultures were brought to life without any of that annoying "tell the audience everything in a short paragraph in the beginning" crap that done authors rely on. I am happy to say I've already purchased the second book.
Ok - downsides first. The journal format slows down the narrative and breaks the flow. The amount of emotional reversal is also a bit annoying - it was a wonderful day, then a terrible day; he was a hideous person, then he was a wonderful person. Day on day it was a bit much.
However, beyond that, the plot was extremely engrossing - pulled into a mirror world, with a mad ruler and a different system of magic. And the two worlds are converging ... with potentially catastrophic results. You want to keep reading to see how it all comes out in the end.
The idea was a bit interesting. The main character mostly likable. The plot had a great foundation.

But, I can only give this three stars. Its hard to put a finger on the exact problem, but I can remember a few. One was the romance, which while necessary for the plot very much felt tacked on. Another was the magic system, which I have to say didn't really work for me.

I also found the second half of the tale to be too much palace intrigue for my tastes. With the usual angst of an uncertain romance added in, and the machinations of a character that never really worked for me, I had to struggle a bit to get through the book.

Others have obviously clearly enjoyed the tale, and it is well written. For me, the way the plot twisted left me uninterested in trying the other books in the series
Everything is summarized. Characterization is imparted through the opinions of the narrator without any events or scenes showing us why that particular conclusion is correct. It's frustrating.
